Southern Alicante, with it´s unique landscape and semi-arid climate, faces challenges that we all kwow: heat waves, biodiversity loss, degraded soils..., all of them worsened by human activity in the region. But in ARBA Vega Baja we are not content with this assessment and we work towards a different future.

We are part of ARBA, a national network with more than 40 groups and 2,000 members that, since 1986, works towards the recovery of our woods and native vegetation. Together with our colleagues, we are committed to a clear objetive: to breathe new life into our land.

For this mission, we have the scientific and technical support of the University of Alicante through its platform RENATUREM Sur de Alicante and of Semillistas, a leading association in the field of reforestation through direct seeding.

In the current context of instability and dependence on external resources, the health of our environment is not a choice: it is a matter of survival. Native vegetation is the foundation that sustains our land: it protects the soil, regulates the climate, retains water and hosts biodiversity.Without it, the desert progresses.

The good news is that there is a solution right at our fingertips: restore the ecosystems from their basement. A living soil, sustained by roots and microorganisms, acts like a sponge: it absorbs water rather than letting it run off, naturally cools the environment, contributes to cloud formation and captures carbon dioxide. Restoring native vegetation is, quite simply, recovering a balanced climate, water cycle and soil in our land.

At ARBA Vega Baja, each person, business or institution can have a key role. It doesn’t matter how you contribute: we all play our part.

With the arrival of autumn, we kick off the loveliest time of year for our work: planting and sowing days. We will be joining our sister ARBAs, ARBA Cartagena-La Unión and ARBA Elx, for joint restoration days across the region. It’ll be the perfect opportunity to take your first steps as a volunteer or member, see teamwork in action, and enjoy a day out with friends of the forest – both current and future.
